PSHE and Relationships Intent

At EBJ, the wellbeing of our children is at the heart of everything we do. Through our PSHE and RSE lessons, we aim to equip them with the skills to manage their emotions, develop self-regulation strategies, and express their needs effectively. We provide regular opportunities for pupils to explore real-life scenarios and experiences, helping them build resilience and emotional awareness. We understand the vital role oral language plays in helping children process their thoughts and worries - what we call their ‘worrits’ - and we support this through programmes such as Melva, which encourage pupils to take ownership of their learning. We value every child’s voice and perspective, and we use PSHE/RSE as a safe space for them to share their unique understanding of the world. In these lessons, pupils are encouraged to ask questions and discuss important topics such as peer pressure, online safety, and puberty. Our goal is to ensure that every child feels safe, supported, kind and confident in who they are.

PSHE and Relationships Implementation

At EBJ, PSHE is taught through two key programmes: Kapow and the innovative Melva programme. These work together to deliver a rich and supportive curriculum focused on three golden threads: Physical and Mental Health Relationships Personal Safety While we aim to deliver PSHE lessons weekly, we also remain flexible - making time for important conversations as they naturally arise. Our commitment to pupils' wellbeing extends beyond PSHE lessons; through our oracy and English curriculum, we place a strong emphasis on social and emotional learning. This approach helps us create safe, supportive classroom environments - where children feel comfortable sharing their experiences, asking questions, and exploring their identity and sense of belonging.

PSHE and Relationships Impact

Through our PSHE and RSE curriculum at EBJ, pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and emotional literacy they need to lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives. The combination of the Kapow and Melva programmes ensures that children not only understand key concepts around physical and mental health, relationships and personal safety, but can also apply them in real-life contexts. As a result, pupils grow in confidence, empathy, and self-awareness - able to communicate effectively, make informed choices and show respect for themselves and others. The impact of our approach is evident in the positive relationships seen across school, pupils’ resilience in facing challenges and their ability to reflect thoughtfully on their own wellbeing. Ultimately, our PSHE and RSE provision empowers children to become compassionate, responsible citizens who value their own voices and the voices of others.
