PE Intent

At East Boldon Junior School, our aim in PE is to create opportunities for our children to take risks and step out of one’s comfort zone, as the only way to fail is to not to try at all. Providing these opportunities will build resilience, ensuring we can develop the skills to deal with challenges and perceived failures. Above all, we want to ensure all our children enjoy Physical Education and Sport. Developing a life-long love of being physically active, experiencing the collaboration of working with others, and showcasing the values of kindness in all that we do, are all values we want to instill in our young sports people. These values will lead to positive experiences for all, regardless of one's perceived ability. Through our progressively planned Physical Education, we aim to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence, independence and confidence in a range of physical activities. As a result, we aim to improve health and well-being, promote active participation as well as lifelong learning so each child fulfils their potential physically, mentally and socially.

PE Implementation

Physical Education is a vital component in the range of experiences offered to children in our school. This importance is reflected in the commitment to provide all children, in each year group, with at least two hours of Physical Education per week. At East Boldon Junior School, pupils experience many areas of learning including: Invasion, Striking and Fielding and Net Games Multi-skills incorporating the Fundamentals of Movement: Agility, Balance and Co-ordination Gymnastics Dance Swimming Athletics Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Alongside these golden threads, the development of non-physical skills are taught progressively and prioritised in all lessons. The non-physical skills include: Communication Cooperation and Collaboration Evaluation Leading a Healthy Lifestyle Managing Feelings Self-confidence and Self-awareness These non-physical skills closely align with our core target of developing pupil’s resilience and independence. Teachers use a range of techniques to assess pupil progress including observing children in lessons. Teachers and leaders talk to our learners about what they are doing, listening to them describe theirs and others' performance

PE Impact

Ultimately, we want the children to leave East Boldon Juniors with a positive view of themselves alongside knowing the importance of being physically active. They should be able to identify an area of sport and physical activity that excites and interests them. From pupil voice completed this academic year, it has been noted that there are very high levels of enjoyment and engagement in the subject that lead to great motivation to improve. Children are consistently experiencing two sessions per week, leading to a positive development in skills as teachers follow the intent plan and teach a broad PE curriculum.
