Music Intent

At East Boldon Junior School, we believe that music is a powerful tool for self-expression, creativity, and personal growth. Our music curriculum is designed to inspire every child to be the best that they can be, encouraging them to explore their individual talents and develop a lifelong appreciation for music. Through engaging lessons and diverse musical experiences, pupils build resilience by embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and persevering through practice and performance. We also foster independence, giving children opportunities to compose, perform, and reflect with confidence. Whether singing, playing an instrument, or working collaboratively, our aim is to nurture well-rounded individuals who find joy and purpose in music. We are proud to host the South Tyneside Strings Orchestra on a weekly basis, enriching our school community with high-quality ensemble experiences. In addition, we offer one-to-one and small group lessons led by specialist peripatetic music teachers, enabling pupils to receive tailored, expert tuition. Music at our school also builds strong social connections as part of our wider school family, with regular performances, choir opportunities, and whole-school productions that celebrate teamwork and help children grow into confident, well-rounded individuals.

Music Implementation

Our music curriculum is delivered through a well-sequenced and inclusive programme that develops musical skills progressively across year groups. Lessons are taught weekly by class teachers and music specialists, following a structured scheme that incorporates listening, performing, composing, and appraising. We use a variety of resources and instruments to ensure that all children are actively engaged and given opportunities to explore music in creative and meaningful ways. Our approach ensures that every child, regardless of background or ability, has the opportunity to participate fully in music and to truly be the best that they can be. Our music curriculum is built around three Golden Threads: Singing, Composing, and Music Genres/Festivals. These key strands are revisited throughout each year to ensure progression, with children building on prior knowledge and developing confidence, creativity, and cultural awareness. Together, they provide a strong foundation for musical understanding, enabling all pupils to express themselves, work independently, and appreciate music from diverse traditions.

Music Impact

Our music curriculum equips pupils with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to express themselves musically in a range of contexts. Children are able to apply what they have learned through performances, composition projects, and group work, demonstrating progression in key musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and structure. Ongoing teacher assessment, including observation, questioning, and recorded evidence, ensures that learning builds over time and identifies next steps for each child. As a result, our pupils develop as resilient, independent learners who value creativity and are well-prepared for further musical opportunities both in and beyond school.

“Music was my first love. And it will be my last” - John Miles (musician and grandparent to a former East Boldon Juniors' pupil)
