Geography Intent

At East Boldon Junior School, our Geography curriculum is rooted in passion, curiosity, and a strong belief that every child can be the best they can be. We celebrate our unique coastal location by giving children real opportunities to explore and connect with the world around them, building a deep understanding of place, people and planet. Geography at EBJ is inclusive and empowering: it promotes resilience, critical thinking, and a sense of global responsibility. Through weekly lessons built around: locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and fieldwork, we ensure every child is supported and challenged. Our children leave us as confident, compassionate learners, inspired to ask big questions, protect their environment, and embrace the diversity of our ever-changing world.

Geography Implementation

Learning in geography is driven by curiosity and big questions that guide each unit, such as “Why do people choose to live near volcanoes?” or “How does our food travel to us?” These enquiry questions help pupils think deeply, explore ideas, and connect their learning to the real world. Geography is taught once a week and alternates with History, giving children a balanced experience of both subjects across the term. The units are carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build up over time, following a spiral curriculum where children revisit key ideas in new and varied contexts - such as Antarctica, rainforests, rivers, deserts, and the Alps. Fieldwork opportunities and map skills are embedded throughout the curriculum, leading up to an independent enquiry where pupils draw together everything they have learned. The geography curriculum fully meets National Curriculum expectations and supports children in becoming knowledgeable, thoughtful, and responsible global citizens.

Geography Impact

We find out amazing things about our world, from tall mountains and winding rivers to busy cities and quiet villages. Geography helps us understand where places are, what they are like, and why they are special. We learn how to read maps, follow routes, use symbols, and understand directions which has a direct impact on the way we see the world outside of the classroom. We find out about things like volcanoes, rivers, beaches, mountains, climate, and weather. This helps us answer big questions like: Why do volcanoes erupt? How are rivers formed? We learn how people live, where they build towns and cities, why they travel, and what jobs they do. We discover how people shape the world and how different life can be around the globe- and then compare and contrast this with England. We learn about caring for the environment, recycling, protecting animals, and how small actions can help the Earth. Geography makes us want to be responsible and thoughtful citizens. Geography helps us become curious learners. We enjoy asking questions, doing fieldwork, collecting data, making observations, and finding our own answers - just like real scientists and explorers.

“Geography is the bridge between cultures. It shows us that we’re all connected.” -  Kofi Annan
