Y3 Computing Learning Journey

In Year 3, pupils follow a rich and engaging computing journey that builds their confidence and curiosity as young digital learners. They begin by exploring Networks, discovering how computers connect and communicate, before moving on to Programming using Scratch, where they create simple animations and interactive projects while developing key coding skills such as sequencing and debugging. Through the Journey Inside a Computer unit, children develop a deeper understanding of the components and processes that make technology work. They then learn how to communicate safely and effectively through Emailing, followed by applying their creativity to produce Video Trailers, where they plan, film and edit short sequences. The year concludes with Data Handling, enabling pupils to collect, organise and present information using digital tools. Together, these units provide a broad, exciting and progressive learning experience that strengthens independence, problem-solving and digital confidence.

Y4 Computing Learning Journey

In Year 4, pupils deepen their digital knowledge through a diverse and increasingly challenging computing curriculum. They begin with Online Safety, developing a mature understanding of how to stay safe, make responsible choices and recognise online risks. Building on previous skills, they move into Further Coding with Scratch, where they create more complex programs using loops, conditionals and variables. During Weather Investigations, pupils collect real-world data and use digital tools to analyse patterns and present findings. They then channel their creativity into Google Website Design, learning how to structure pages, insert media and design with purpose. Through Google Networks, children explore how information travels across the internet, strengthening their understanding of connectivity. The year concludes with Computational Thinking, where they practise decomposition, pattern recognition and logical reasoning. Together, these units foster independence, resilience and confidence as pupils tackle more sophisticated digital challenges.

Y5 Computing Learning Journey

In Year 5, pupils expand their digital capabilities through a varied and ambitious computing curriculum. They begin by exploring Search Engines, learning how information is indexed, how to evaluate online content, and how to search efficiently and responsibly. Online Safety is revisited at a deeper level, helping pupils navigate more complex online interactions and understand issues such as digital footprints and privacy. Their coding skills advance through Programming using Micro:Bit, where they create interactive programs using sensors, inputs and outputs. In Data Handling, pupils collect, interpret and present data to support real-world problem-solving, before applying their computational thinking to Programming a Mars Rover, designing algorithms to simulate navigation and autonomous movement. The year culminates in Stop Motion Animation, allowing children to combine creativity with technical skills as they plan, storyboard and produce their own animated sequences. Across all units, pupils develop independence, resilience and confidence as capable and thoughtful digital learners.

Y6 Computing Learning Journey

In Year 6, pupils embark on an inspiring and thought-provoking computing journey that prepares them for secondary school and the wider digital world. They begin by studying the significance of Bletchley Park, linking their computing learning with their World War II studies to understand early codebreaking, encryption and the historical roots of modern computing. They then explore Artificial Intelligence, considering how machines learn, the benefits and challenges of AI, and the ethical questions it raises. Building on their prior programming experience, pupils learn Python, gaining confidence with text-based coding and developing algorithms that require precision and logical thinking. Through Data Handling, they gather, manipulate and interpret data to draw meaningful conclusions. The year concludes with a Skills Showcase, where pupils independently apply their learning to design and create a digital project of their choice. Across the journey, Year 6 learners demonstrate independence, resilience and a mature understanding of how computing shapes the past, present and future.
