Computing Intent

At East Boldon Junior School, computing is taught by providing a rich, engaging curriculum tailored to equip our pupils with the digital skills they need for the future. Rooted in our school values, we encourage children to be ready to learn by embracing new technologies, be prepared to be challenged through problem-solving and coding tasks, be responsible for our actions by understanding online safety, and be kind to our school family through respectful digital communication. Our approach reflects the social and geographical context of our community, ensuring children grow up digitally literate in an increasingly connected world. As John Dewey says, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow”. Computing at EBJ has been carefully developed to meet the needs of our learners, fostering confidence and creativity in a supportive environment, and is unique in how it combines national curriculum aims with our school’s ethos and locality.

Computing Implementation

Computing at East Boldon Junior School is taught through weekly, focused lessons held in our dedicated computing space, The Lodge, where each child has access to a laptop and any other required equipment or device. Lessons follow a structured curriculum which covers the three key areas of computing: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. These are explored through six core strands: Computing systems and networks, Programming, Data handling, Creating media, and Online safety. Pupils learn how different hardware and software work, write and debug code, handle data responsibly, create and edit digital content, and develop an age-appropriate understanding of how to stay safe online. Our curriculum is built around "Golden Threads" – a spiral approach that ensures the aforementioned six core strands, key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed each year, enabling children to build confidence and deepen their understanding over time.

Computing Impact

The impact of computing at East Boldon Junior School is seen in pupils who are confident, responsible and creative users of technology. We want our children to leave EBJ equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a digital world – able to problem-solve, think logically, use technology safely and respectfully, and apply their learning across a range of subjects and real-life contexts. Through pupil voice, children tell us they enjoy computing lessons, particularly the challenge of coding, the creativity of producing digital media, and the independence that comes with using technology effectively. As Steve Jobs once said, “Everybody should learn to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think,” and this is reflected in the way our curriculum not only develops technical competence but also prepares pupils to be thoughtful, responsible digital citizens.

“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow” - John Dewey

“The most important skill for a computer scientist is problem-solving. Even if you don’t know all the details of the technology you are using, if you can solve the problem, you can figure out how to do it” - Bill Gates
