Art and Design Intent

At East Boldon Junior School, we are very proud of our creative curriculum as it is designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learn about art and artists across cultures and through history.  We value each child as an individual and ask them to use Art and Design to share their own unique understanding of the world. We want our children to be the best they can be. In Art and Design, we endeavour to ensure our students are resilient in their approach and are not afraid to make mistakes.  Through the creative process we challenge children’s communication skills by asking them to evaluate their work, share ideas and make improvements.

Art and Design Implementation

Our Curriculum is designed with five strands that run throughout. These are: Generating ideas; Using sketchbooks; Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour); Knowledge of artists and Evaluating and analysing. Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout units. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Units in each year group are organised into four core areas: Drawing; Painting and mixed-media; Sculpture and 3D and Craft and design.

Art and Design Impact

Our KS2 Art and Design curriculum has a significant impact on our pupils’ creativity, confidence, and self-expression. Through a carefully planned and progressive programme of study, children develop key artistic skills such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media, while also learning about influential artists, designers, and cultural art forms. Our curriculum encourages experimentation and individual interpretation, helping pupils to think critically and reflect on their own work and that of others. As a result, children gain not only technical proficiency but also a deeper appreciation of the visual world around them. Art and Design at our school fosters a sense of pride and achievement, enriching the wider curriculum and contributing to the development of well-rounded, imaginative learners.

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” - Thomas Merton

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes, art is knowing which ones to keep” - Scott Adams
